I tried it this year. For me Lynne, No Mow May was a a time for me to stop and reflect more on how to make a more hospitable garden for all. I don’t use chemicals already and am trying to be more conscious of water. Because our small lawn has been chemical free for years, leaving it alone resulted in some surprises, wild grasses and flowers/weeds that I just left alone at the end of the month. It was also a recognition that dandelions and weeds are not my enemy and in fact creating a barren space with little variety of life is much more harmful. I know that I’m just at the beginning of a learning curve on this and appreciate this post. I would love to see more people being more conscious gardeners, planting native plants and not using pesticides.

We use an old-fashioned manual push mower, and so we have to mow regularly otherwise we wouldn’t be able to mow at all. But we do keep a sizeable wildflower patch in our backyard that is allowed to grow all season, refreshed with pollinator seed mix every spring.
