Gorgeous garden pics. I appreciate your balanced perspective and thoughtful questions. Any tips for raspberries? Mine are delicious but smaller and much less profuse than last year. Kale and garlic scapes are solid.

Possibly overcrowding. You might try thinning them more next time you prune. Berries also tend to have mast years when they just go nuts and produce like crazy, then years when they're just so so, for no identifiable reason.

We’ve found some of those Asian jumping worms as well, but they seem to have no effect on our garden, maybe for the same reason. Meanwhile, gardeners are washing their plant roots before sharing transplants and otherwise going to great lengths to avoid the worms, which I’m now seeing as possibly unnecessary alarmism.

It might be too early to tell what harm they will cause, but I've become skeptical of the hysteria over them. It definitely seems like there aren't as many this year so maybe things are balancing out.

I totally agree with you, and I've seen the same thing. They arrived in our neighborhood last spring, and I see dead ones on sidewalks. I'm also wondering if a predator has discovered them after all. While planting the spring garden, I found two of them, but that's it, and this year we have the best soil and best garden results yet.

"How different would we feel if, instead of hearing only about how many tons of carbon have been released by the fires, we were told how many black bears, tamarack trees, and lynx had gone up in smoke?" So true. I remember this Australian dude I talked to during the horrible Australian wild fires of a couple years ago when we were seeing burning koalas on TV. "Why is everyone so excited?" he said. "There aren't any humans in there. It's all just brush." I wasn't allowed to argue with him. He was a customer, but the callousness of so many people when it comes to nature may well end up being the biggest crime (among many) of the human race.

What a beautiful garden that's teeming with life!! I'll be pondering how to get a megaphone for this question: "How different would we feel if, instead of hearing only about how many tons of carbon have been released by the fires, we were told how many black bears, tamarack trees, and lynx had gone up in smoke?"
