Start the work week right by checking out my video about plant guilds below. I call them ‘impromptu’ because I didn't design them beforehand, then plant them all at once. They developed over time by chance or necessity. Some plants just appeared (clover mostly) or migrated from nearby plantings (strawberries, garlic chives.) Other plants proliferated successfully and their offspring needed a home.
Plants growing naturally aren't evenly and widely spaced, but grow close together to take advantage of the light and space available. You can encourage plants to do the same in your garden. You'll do less weeding and watering, and most importantly you will have room for more plants! You'll know you have a successful guild if your plants are thriving, and you're doing less work while enjoying the harvest.
As long as you don't guild any lilies! (Sorry. I couldn't resist.)
I share your guild skepticism, and I enjoyed your impromptu versions! We have some of those as well, and they are a great example of nature knowing better than we do what goes (and grows) together.
